Summer School in Learning for Cognitive Systems 2006

18-22 September 2006

CoSy Project

Motivation and Intention

In cognitive systems, many different kinds of learning mechanisms are required in different components. For example learning has to enable a cognitive system to develop new and to improve and adapt existing skills for perception, action and planning. Current theories of learning will need to be substantially extended to explain, for instance, kinds of learning that extend the individual's ontology for perceiving and thinking about the environment, and kinds of learning that develop fluency and speed in motor performance, e.g. because reactive components are trained by processes in deliberative components.

The summer school aims to bring together researchers concerned with various types of learning mechanisms and techniques related to cognitive systems. Each of the speaker will give both an overview of their respective research domain and talk about the most recent and exiting developments in the field. Additionally we propose to organize smaller reading groups which look at various state-of-the-art papers in the respective field. Discussions will not only help to clarify and understand the most important development in the respective fields but also help to cross-fertilize between the quite distinct research areas.

The theme of the summerschool is "Learning in Cognitive Systems" and we are aiming to cover a range of topics ranging from Developmental Psychology, Learning in Development, Learning in Robotics, Learning in Vision and Learning in Language.

Learning - in various forms - plays an essential role in many ways for the science of cognitive systems which is why we have chosen the topic for this summer school.

Social Events

Sunday - day of arrival
We do not have anything special organized, however, it is probably a good idea to visit the bar in the hotel around 7-7:30pm to get to know each other.

Monday
There is a reception for all participants at 7pm, on the 6th floor in the Hotel. There is a BBQ style meal with several salads and dressings, various sorts of meat. 3 glasses of drink are included for everyone, and further consumptions can be payed individually.

Wednesday
There is a dinner in Zitadellenschänke in Spandau at 7pm. See google maps link below for location. We have organized a coach ride from the hotel to the restarurant. The bus leaves at 6pm from the front of the hotel. Note for those who for whatever reason prefer to go individually, it takes minimum 40 minutes to get there by public transportation.

Address: Am Juliusturm, 13599 Berlin-Spandau, Google maps link

Organization

This summer school is organized and financed by the CoSy-project. The main goal of the CoSy project is to advance the science of cognitive systems through a multi-disciplinary investigation of requirements, design options and trade-offs for human-like, autonomous, integrated, physical (e.g., robot) systems, including requirements for architectures, for forms of representation, for perceptual mechanisms, for learning, planning, reasoning and motivation, for action and communication.
