Sensing and Monitoring Professional Skiing Athletes: Lessons Learned from a Collaboration with Ski Trainer's

Florian Michahelles and Bernt Schiele, In Pervasive Computing Magazine, IEEE 2005. pdf

Abstract: The paper presents an application case of wearable sensors to professional downhill skiing. After the identification of important issues in professional downhill skiing we develop a wearable sensor platform. The main idea is to use wearable sensors to reveal information about the athlete's motions, such as forces, rotations or accelerations, which are either difficult or impossible for the trainer to observe or even quantify. Also, a data-viewer software is developed to visualize and synchronize a recorded video together with the wearable sensor data. The approach is evaluated first by 'self-testing' the initial system and then by talking to experts in order to improve the design together with with potential end users.
